We've talked about some things that I would say differently in previous episodes. If you've missed those, you can see the link below to access the previous 16 episodes.
Speaker 0 00:00:49 Today we're ready for chapter 17. What I learned about purpose while reading a book in one sitting, and basically the premise of this chapter is, um, something I discovered after reading Philippians a number of times and how they, they really were just kind of pursuing, helping other people in the gospel just as, as Paul had brought the gospel to them. So just as what Paul had done for them and bringing the gospel to them, they are now participating in that same work and suffering, actually experiencing persecution as a result in taking the gospel to others. And Paul says in Philippians one, how that is a sign of their salvation and of the people who are persecuting a sign of their destruction because of how bold the Philippian people were in taking the gospel. And so the, the basic premise of this chapter is just that what God is doing in our lives speaks to what our purpose can be or what our purpose is, that he may want to use us to do that same work in somebody else.
Speaker 0 00:02:00 And that's the whole premise of this chapter. There really isn't a lot that I would say differently. Um, I give some illustrations, various illustrations in the chapter, uh, some, some of my interaction on the book of Philippians. I would probably teach it a little more fully now, now that I know more about Philippians. Um, but yeah, I, I still really believe this. I think we spend so much time and can spend, and, and part of why I'm passionate about this is because it, it's my own story in that I was so worked up. We're like, what is my purpose in life? And really, I don't think it's that hard. I think as we look back in our life and we see what God has been doing, or the different experiences we have gone through, the different pieces to our own story, those are threads for the story God wants us to help
Speaker 1 00:02:58 Then write, or the purpose that God has given us in, in helping other people. And so, if you're someone who has found, you know, you've struggled to know what is your purpose in life, I hope that this chapter can be comforting in that don't, like, I hope it can put you at ease. Don't stress about it. It's not, there isn't this miraculous purpose that you're supposed to somehow know and figure out in order to really fulfill what God has designed you for. But at the same time, sometimes we can look back and maybe, maybe we don't like our stories. Um, I know for myself, like there's, there's significant chunk of my past that that is either painful or it's, it's not something, I don't really see what God is like, how is God going to use that for the future? Or I don't even know that I want to be a part of helping somebody in a way that I always help because it was a mess like that.
Speaker 1 00:03:58 And, and I think that's okay. I think it's okay to be at a place where you are kind of uncomfortable with your past. I I do think that God wants to step into that with you and to process that with you, and that in processing that you will grow deeper with Jesus what he desires to do with that in the future. You don't have to worry about that really, but right now, if that's kind of where you're at, like you're, you are, um, just like, yeah, you don't see a lot of good in your past. Just, just bring that to Jesus. Allow God to begin speaking to your life. Maybe, maybe find a counselor or therapist to, to process some of those things to, because when we have experiences like that that either we're ashamed of or we don't like, like that affects the way we think about life, the way we think about ourselves, and it's, it's valuable to have someone help us kind of discover healthy ways of thinking and living.
Speaker 1 00:05:05 However, or on the flip side, if, if you are stressed about your purpose in life, but then you can look back and be like, Hey, yeah, I was, I was helped in, you know, for me writing this book, I found freedom from lust. I wanna help other people like don't twiddle around worrying. Like, should I be moving overseas to go into missions? Like if, if those doors haven't opened, just start helping the young men in your area right now overcome lost or, or whatever it is that God has done in your life. Like the, the fingerprints, God's fingerprints on your past is a part of direction for the future. So I would like to know if you read this chapter, if you found it helpful, uh, or if there's something you would like me to reconsider or you're not
Speaker 2 00:05:56 Sure, any questions you have, feel free to drop a comment or shoot me a message. Tomorrow we will be doing chapter 18. You can live without sex, but not without intimacy. This might be, might be a little bit of a difficult chapter, but it'll be interesting to read it again. I, I, it was one of the most important chapters to me personally because I think sometimes we think women are all about relationships. And we forget that men need relationships too. And that's really kind of another key component to what drives us towards sexual behaviors is the desire for intimacy. So we'll be discussing that chapter tomorrow. Until then, grace and Peace.
